Special measure: Longer period of work for holders of open work permits under the temporary resident to permanent resident pathway

Starting on August 2, 2022, in most cases, we'll email to tell you that you are eligible for a longer period of work on your current work permit if you meet both following conditions:

This will allow you to work until December 31, 2024.

This special measure will ensure that you can continue to work while we process your permanent residence application.

What you need to do

  1. Check your email, including your junk folder, for messages from an email address that ends in @cic.gc.ca.
  2. Review the 3 conditions in the letter and make sure they don't apply to you:
    1. You now live outside Canada.
    2. The mailing address on the letter is incorrect.
    3. You don't accept the offer of a longer work permit.
  3. If none of the conditions apply to you, you don't need to do anything else.

How long it will take to get the work permit

You should get your work permit at your mailing address around the middle of October.

If you have questions about these measures

Check if any of the scenarios below apply to you. If you can't find an answer to your question below, you can contact us using the web form.

If you already applied to extend your work permit under this public policy

Do not reply to the email. We'll send you a new work permit around the middle of October. Your application to extend your work permit under this public policy will be cancelled, and your processing fee will be refunded.

If you don't get an email by August 12, 2022

You're not eligible to be mailed a work permit under this special measure. However, you may still be eligible for an open work permit under the public policy. You can fill out an application and apply to extend your work permit. Follow these instructions.

If you're not eligible to be mailed a new work permit

Contact us at the email address provided in the letter. If you want to keep working after your current work permit expires, follow these instructions to apply to extend your work permit.

If you're no longer living in Canada

You must email us at the email address provided in the letter if you've left Canada. If you don't, it may be considered misrepresentation and you may be found inadmissible. This could mean that you cannot return to Canada for 5 years.

If your mailing address has changed

You must email us at the email address provided in the letter, if your mailing address does not match what's shown at the top of your letter. Follow these instructions to apply to extend your work permit and provide your new mailing address in your application.

If you don't want a longer work permit

You must email us by August 19, 2022, at the email address provided in the letter.
