Government of Canada Tables Report on Review of Specific Claims Tribunal Act

OTTAWA, ONTARIO (November 25, 2016) — The Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs issued the following statement today:

“Today, my report with respect to the review of the Specific Claims Tribunal Act was tabled in Parliament. During the review, First Nations expressed general satisfaction with the Specific Claims Tribunal and its work. There were no calls for any immediate changes to the Act.

However, First Nations made clear their concerns about how the specific claims process itself is currently functioning. Our Government has listened to those concerns and we are committed to working in partnership to ensure the specific claims process supports the goal of reconciliation with First Nation people.

We are working with the Assembly of First Nations, First Nations and other interested parties in a collaborative process to identify and address the problems with the current specific claims process, including issues around funding to support the research and development of claims, the process to resolve claims greater than $150 million, the use of mediation in negotiation processes and clarity with respect to public reporting.

Our Government is committed to renewing the relationship with Indigenous peoples, based on the recognition of rights, respect, co-operation and partnership. Negotiating settlements is an invaluable tool as we work to right past wrongs. Canada and all Canadians benefit as we take concrete steps to advance reconciliation with First Nations.”
