News Release

Ottawa, Ontario (January 12, 2017) - The Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, issued the following statement today:

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Arthur Manuel, former Chief of Neskonlith Indian Band and chair of Shuswap Nation Tribal Council.

I want to offer my sincere sympathies and condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Arthur Manuel.

He was a strong advocate for Indigenous rights not only in British Columbia and Canada but internationally through his work with the United Nations, the Hague and the World Trade Organization.

A well respected and recognized leader, Arthur Manuel will be remembered for his service and contributions he made in advancing Indigenous rights.

As recently as 2015 he collaborated with Grand Chief Ron Derrickson and wrote the book “Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-up Call” which describes their experiences and struggles as they advocated for Indigenous rights and self-determination."

His legacy and his tireless work will serve to inspire the next generation of Indigenous leaders and all Canadians to realize the changes necessary for true reconciliation.
