CIHR investment at the University of Sherbrooke

Backgrounder

On November 5, 2018, Minister Bibeau highlighted an investment of $11.5 million in 16 health research projects at the University of Sherbrooke. In addition to this investment, five one-year bridge grants of $100,000 each were awarded. These bridge grants provide researchers with smaller funding amounts to support their research until the next competition.

The projects are supported through the two most recent Project Grant competitions, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research's (CIHR) largest funding program. Twice-yearly, this program awards multi-year grants to help researchers in different stages of their careers to carry out research projects that cover the full range of health research topics. Project grant recipients are leaders in their fields and their projects tackle pressing health issues that matter to Canadians.

CIHR has invested $277 million to support 369 research grants across Canada as part of the spring 2018 competition and $372 million to support 512 research projects for the fall 2017 competition. This investment in health research supports our economy and creates high quality middle class jobs. Each $100 million invested in health research represents 1,800 jobs for researchers and trainees.
