News release

May 23, 2024   Iqaluit, Nunavut    Natural Resources Canada

The Government of Canada is working in collaboration with territorial, provincial and Indigenous partners to unlock economic opportunities, create sustainable jobs and fight climate change.

Today, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources; the Honourable David Akeeagok, Nunavut’s Minister of Human Resources, Economic Development and Transportation, Mines and Trade; and the Honourable Daniel Qavvik, Nunavut’s Minister of Environment, Energy, Culture and Heritage, announced that Nunavut is formally joining the Regional Energy and Resource Tables (Regional Tables). The Regional Tables are a collaborative initiative among the federal government and individual provinces and territories, alongside Indigenous partners and with the input of key stakeholders, that aim to advance, accelerate and collaborate on the top economic priorities in the energy and resource sectors in each of Canada’s regions as we transition to a net-zero future.

Working collaboratively through the Regional Energy and Resource Table, Canada and Nunavut, along with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, will identify and advance economic opportunities across Nunavut’s energy and resource sectors.

By pursuing and promoting some of the most promising opportunities in Nunavut through a Regional Table, both public dollars and private capital can be leveraged to support economic growth and reconciliation, job creation, climate action and goals involving advancing diversity and equity while securing enduring prosperity for communities in Nunavut as we build a net-zero world.

Quotes

In order to lead in the transition to a prosperous net-zero economy, we must thoughtfully plan and collaborate with key partners. The work done at this table will enable the Government of Nunavut and the Government of Canada, along with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated and other key Inuit partners, to collectively accelerate sustainable economic activity for the people of Nunavut. These types of collaborations are positioning Canada as an inclusive global leader in the low-carbon future.”
