Canada Drives Electric Vehicle Infrastructure and Innovation

On November 29, 2025, David Myles, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages and to the Secretary of State (Nature), on behalf of the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced over $10 million in federal funding to help pave the way for EV adoption. This funding includes:

• over $9 million through the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program for two projects to install over 1,200 EV chargers in locations across Canada; and
• $1.4 million under the Energy Innovation Program for a University of New Brunswick-led research and development project to develop new magnetic materials for EV motors. 

^{Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP)}

ZEVIP provides funding toward the deployment of EV chargers and hydrogen refuelling stations where Canadians live, work, travel and play.

Location: Alberta, New Brunswick and Ontario
Funding amount: $7,000,000
Description: This project will install a target of 950 Level 2 chargers and 40 fast chargers in locations primarily across Alberta, New Brunswick and Ontario.

Recipient: New Brunswick Power Corporation
Location: New Brunswick
Funding amount: $2,096,319
Description: This project will install a target of 240 EV chargers located at public places, on-street parking, multi-family buildings and workplaces or for light-duty vehicle fleets. This complements an original agreement brings the total funding to $3,033,569 and a target of 347 EV chargers. 

^{Energy Innovation Program – On-Road Transportation Decarbonization (EIP-OTD) Call For Proposals}

EIP-OTD projects address technical and market barriers for medium- to heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs) that have low or zero emissions; increase zero-emissions vehicle uptake; and improve transportation system efficiency. 

Project name: New Magnetic Materials for Electric Vehicle Motors
Recipient: University of New Brunswick
Location: Fredericton, New Brunswick
Funding amount: $1,400,000
Description: The objective of this project is to reduce the cost and improve the performance of electric motors used in EVs, ensuring a secure and cost-effective supply chain for motor materials through the development of new, high-silicon electrical steels and rare-earth–free permanent magnets.
