Canadian Coast Guard seasonal rescue stations resume operation

The Canadian Coast Guard announces the opening of its seasonal rescue stations in Bainsville (Ontario), Pointe-aux-Anglais (Oka), Beaconsfield, Longueuil, Sorel and Trois-Rivières. These stations will resume regular operations on May 31, 2017 at noon. They will continue until September 6, 2017 during the week, and until September 24, 2017 on weekends. The Beaconsfield rescue station will temporarily provide search and rescue services from the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club in Dorval until the water levels return to normal.

Gaspé (Quebec) - Through the $1.5-billion Oceans Protection Plan (OPP), the Government of Canada is helping Canada become a world leader in marine safety. Today the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, announced that, in addition to 12 new long-range search-and-rescue lifeboats currently being built, the Government plans on building an additional eight boats, five of which will be purchased through the OPP.

Abandoned, derelict and wrecked vessels are a real problem for certain Canadian municipalities because of the risks that they pose to the marine environment, safe navigation, public health, the quality of life of waterfront residents, and local economies. That is the case for the SS Corfu Island, which ran aground off the Magdalen Islands archipelago in 1963 and is on a beach in Étang-du-Nord.
