“This year as we celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, it’s an opportunity to reflect on how far our nation has come in building an open and equal society, one in which all Canadians should be treated fairly, with respect and dignity.
The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, Jean Rioux, today issued the following statement on the International Day of La Francophonie:
“Alfred Barr was the most amazing man I have ever known. He was incredibly kind and thoughtful, someone who always put others before himself. He was continually encouraging and positive, even in difficult circumstances, and motivated me and others to be hardworking and try different things. He valued his family immensely and also became an integral member of my family.
“Today, on International Women’s Day, I call on Canada’s Defence Community to commemorate and celebrate the contributions and achievements of women in the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), and to help forge a better-working, gender-inclusive environment for all of us.
It is with great sorrow that I learned today of Master Corporal Alfred Barr’s death, one of Canada’s finest Search and Rescue Technicians, during a training event.
This afternoon it hit hard to learn of the tragic loss of Master Corporal Alfred Barr, a Search and Rescue Technician from 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron at 17 Wing Winnipeg, during a training incident near Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
Early in my mandate, I sought pre-mandate approval from the Minister of National Defence to launch an investigation into the fatal grenade incident at CFB Valcartier, in which six cadets died and dozens wounded. In July 2015, I released my report that was widely publicized. In this report I focused on the lack of assistance offered to the injured, to their families and to the families of the six boys who died.
