The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, will participate in a panel discussion to demonstrate Canada’s commitment to climate adaptation and climate partnerships, as part of Canada’s 5-year $5.3B climate finance commitment.
Canada and the United States share one of the closest relationships in the world. At the end of last year, trade in goods between Canada and the United States reached an all-time high. This is a testament to the strength of our close relationship, our shared values, and CUSMA.
Fifty years ago today, following the end of Bangladesh’s War of Independence, Canada was one of the first countries to officially recognize the independent state of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, marking the start of our long and successful relationship.
Today, to mark the International Day against the Use of Child Soldiers, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, and the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement: “Children continue to be robbed of their most basic rights because of their recruitment and use in armed conflicts. Instead of living their childhood, these children are trained to fight, and armed with deadly weapons. They are made victims of child labour, are sexually exploited or forced into marriage. As a result, many of these children are killed or suffer from severe and lasting physical and emotional trauma.
The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement: “Given the continued deterioration of the security situation caused by the build up of Russian troops on Ukraine’s border, we will be moving our operations to a temporary office in Lviv and temporarily suspending operations at our embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine.
As we continue to work closely with our partners and monitor the situation, I urge all Canadians in Ukraine to make the necessary arrangements to leave the country now.
Today, during the third Global Media Freedom Conference in Tallinn, Estonia, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, Minister of State for South Asia and the Commonwealth and the Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, awarded the 2022 Canada-United Kingdom Media Freedom Award to Vietnamese journalist Pham Doan Trang.
