The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement:
“This year’s International Day of Peace puts the focus on building a culture of peace, one where dialogue, shared understanding and cooperation are cultivated and practised. A spirit of inclusiveness and respect for diversity are essential, as is respect for the human rights of everyone, without distinction of any kind, including race, gender, religion, political or other opinion, national identity or social origin. These are the preconditions for peace, upon which the survival of our global community depends.
The world is on the verge of eradicating polio, but humanitarian crises, overstretched health systems and the aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic have created new challenges. Canada has played a leading role in the global health response to polio, and we are stepping up once again.

The Honourable Melanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, will co-host a Women Foreign Ministers’ Meeting from September 19 to 20, 2024, in Toronto, Ontario.
Karen Mollica (BA Hons [Political Science], McMaster University, 2000; MA [International Affairs], Carleton University, 2003) joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 2003 following internships in Guyana and Costa Rica.
The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will co-host a women foreign ministers’ meeting (WFMM) in Toronto on September 19 and 20, 2024, with Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica.

Effective immediately, Canada is imposing sanctions against Iran by listing 5 Iranian individuals directly responsible for the implementation of Iran’s repressive and discriminatory laws and policies targeted at women, girls and minorities.
