Today, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, announced further support from the Government of Canada to create more than 450 internship opportunities for recent graduates through the Science Horizons Youth Internship Program in partnership with environmental science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) employers across Canada. Interns bring creativity, new knowledge, dedication, and enthusiasm to their jobs. This will give young people the opportunity to gain valuable experience to actively participate in the workforce.

Today, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, announced the inaugural members of the new Environment and Climate Change Youth Council. The establishment of the Youth Council aligns well with today’s International Youth Day theme to promote intergenerational solidarity, as this diverse group of ten young Canadians will advise the Minister and departmental officials on key environmental and climate issues.


Diesel spill at Northwest Territories diamond mine results in $350,000 fine

On July 25, 2022, De Beers Canada, Inc. was sentenced to pay $350,000, in Yellowknife Territorial Court, Northwest Territories, after pleading guilty to one offence under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA), in violation of the Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products Regulations, subsection 2.1(1). The fine will be directed to the Government of Canada’s Environmental Damages Fund to support projects that benefit the natural environment.
