Today, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Catherine McKenna, announced the designation of the Stanley Cup as a national historic event with the unveiling of a Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC) plaque.
The Stanley Cup is the oldest and most prestigious trophy in North American team sports. Initially known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, Governor General of Canada Lord Stanley of Preston donated it in 1892 for the best Canadian hockey team.
Jasper National Park
Established in 1907 and covering more than 11,000 km2, Jasper National Park is the largest of the Rocky Mountain national parks and welcomes more than 2 million visitors every year. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the park boasts abundant wildlife populations, nearly 1,000 km of trails, and is the world’s second largest dark sky preserve. It has 10 roadside campgrounds, with more than 1,500 campsites, 300 km of paved roads (including the Trans-Canada Yellowhead Highway (Highway #16), 61 viewpoints and pull-offs, and 33 picnic areas.
