Over the years, Shelburne's historic architecture and seaside vistas have doubled for 17th century Salem, Massachusetts and other cinematic locations. The Guild Hall, built in 1994 for the film The Scarlet Letter, was used subsequently as an events and community facility. The building was never intended to serve as a permanent structure and its current state of disrepair requires that it be shut down. Community consultations have concluded that a new multifunctional events space suitable for concerts, festivals and the Shelburne Farmer's Market is needed. The consultations have developed a consensus to cease spending on the aging and impractical current building and to construct a new Guild Hall on the same site to meet current and anticipated community needs.

The Royal St. John's Regatta Committee has constructed a new three-story timing, viewing and judging tower and has developed a strategic plan to recognize, celebrate and mark the 200th anniversary in 2018, thanks in part to an investment from the Government of Canada. Federal funding of over $125,000 was announced today by the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) to help support an important piece of infrastructure and to elevate the 200th anniversary to a key national and international sporting and cultural event.
