Canada’s national research funding agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Canada Foundation for Innovation—are deeply saddened by the crash of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 in Tehran, Iran, yesterday, which claimed the lives of 176 people, including 63 Canadians and many with links to Canada.

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement: “I was deeply shocked and saddened to learn that, according to preliminary reports, at least 63 Canadians were among the 176 people who were killed when Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 crashed after takeoff yesterday near Tehran, Iran. As more information becomes available, including regarding dual citizens, this number could change. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones in this tragic event, including citizens of a number of other countries.
