Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today. Worldwide, an estimated one in three women will experience physical or sexual abuse in her lifetime.
Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which also marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.
“Canada condemns all forms of gender-based violence against women, girls and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirit and gender non-binary people everywhere. This can include child, early and forced marriage; female genital mutilation and cutting; and sexual violence and exploitation, including in conflict and in digital contexts..."
On this day we honour all missing and murdered Indigenous women, and stand in solidarity with their families who continue to grieve their loss and fight for justice.
