Strengthened Inshore Rescue
Since 2013, the Canadian Coast Guard has operated an Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) facility on a seasonal basis at HMCS Discovery, a Royal Canadian Naval Reserve facility located on the shore of Vancouver Harbour. Established in the 1970s, CCG's IRB program provides search and rescue coverage in key areas – including major metropolitan harbours – during peak times in the recreational boating season.

The Honourable John Duncan, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, and the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the Government's intent to pursue an amendment to the Pacific Fishery Regulations, 1993, to create separate commercial fishing licence categories for tuna, lingcod and dogfish. These species, along with Pacific cod, sole and flounder, skate, sturgeon and smelt, are currently grouped together as "Schedule II species" under Schedule II, Part II of the Pacific Fishery Regulations.

The offshore Arctic surf clam fishery has been operating on the Scotian Shelf since 1986, and on the Grand Banks since 1989. What began as an exploratory fishery has developed into a major industry with annual sales of up to $60 million.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada announced today that the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for Offshore Arctic surf clam will increase from 38,756 tonnes to 52,655 tonnes on the Banquereau Bank and Grand Bank creating more jobs and economic activity in Atlantic Canada. The new TAC begins with the 2016 fishery.

Funding will provide a safer and more efficient working environment for fishermen and harbour users across the province.

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, announced today that the Harper Government has awarded a $2.7 million contract to Heddle Marine Service Incorporated for important refit and maintenance work for the CCGS Griffon. This is the second contract awarded by the Government of Canada to this shipyard in July.
