Backgrounder - Canada-South Korea Agreement on Science, Technology and Innovation

The Government of Canada recognizes great opportunities for cooperation in science, technology and innovation (ST&I) with South Korea and views this as a key element of the bilateral relationship. An ST&I agreement with South Korea will allow Canada to build a lasting strategic framework with one of the world's most innovative economies and top funders of research and development (R & D). South Korea's gross expenditure on R & D in 2013 was KRW$59.3 trillion (equivalent to C$55.8 billion). South Korea benefits from a robust industrial R & D system with business enterprise expenditures on R & D as a percentage of GDP of 3.14 percent in 2013.

The Honourable Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, P.C., Q.C., MP for Delta–Richmond East and Minister of National Revenue and Finance Parliamentary Secretary Andrew Saxton, Member of Parliament for North Vancouver, celebrated the first installment of the Harper Government's boosted Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) today. The newly increased child care benefit pays almost $2000 every year for each child under 6 and $720 for each aged child 6 through 17. With a retroactive payment from January 1, 2015, the Harper Government transferred almost $3 billion to 3.8 million families today-the largest single-day direct payment to families in history.
