Identification of First World War Soldiers in Hallu, France

In 2006, three sets of skeletal remains were recovered by a young resident in the village of Hallu, France. The following year, another five sets of remains were recovered from the same area ¿ all remains being those of Canadian soldiers from the First World War and believed to be from the 78th Battalion, also known as the Winnipeg Grenadiers. Since 2006, the Directorate of History and Heritage has been working towards the identification of these soldiers.

Today Mr. James Bezan, Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, announced on behalf of the Minister of National Defence that the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have succeeded in identifying the remains of four First World War soldiers found in Hallu, France, as those of Lieutenant Clifford Neelands, Lance Sergeant John Lindell, Private Lachlan McKinnon, and Private William Simms.

Today, Minister Gary Goodyear, accompanied by local MP Colin Carrie, took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the UOIT-Baagwating Indigenous Student Centre at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). The Centre is open to indigenous students attending UOIT and to community partners who use the expanded communal space for ceremonies and seminars.
