Minister Fast Highlights Trade and Investment Ties with Africa

Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships – Procurement process

The Government of Canada is committed to building ships for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) in Canada, and to supporting the Canadian shipbuilding industry and revitalizing Canadian shipyards. The National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) – the largest procurement sourcing arrangement in Canadian history – will create thousands of high–value jobs across Canada and will have significant economic benefits for shipbuilding and related industries. Through this strategy, Canada will replace, and in some cases, enhance the capability of the current surface fleets of the RCN and the CCG.


Vice-Admiral Harry DeWolf, CBE, DSO, DSC, CD

Vice–Admiral Harry DeWolf was born in Bedford, Nova Scotia, in 1903 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) as a cadet in 1918 to attend the Royal Naval College of Canada in Esquimalt, British Columbia. From 1921 until 1925, he conducted his training with the Royal Navy (RN) in the battleship His Majesty's Ship (HMS) Resolution followed by training courses in RN schools, as well as service at sea with the RN and RCN. In 1928, he specialized in navigation, attending the Long Navigation Course at HMS Dryad in England, followed by further seagoing and staff appointments with both the RN and RCN.


PM announces the name of the first of the Royal Canadian Navy's Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the name of the first of the Royal Canadian Navy's (RCN) Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS). Her Majesty's Canadian Ship Harry DeWolf, named in honour of a wartime Canadian naval hero, will be the first of a fleet of AOPS designed to better enable the RCN to exercise sovereignty in Canadian waters, including in the Arctic. The Prime Minister made the announcement at His Majesty's Canadian Ship Haida, formerly commanded by Vice-Admiral Harry DeWolf, which currently serves as a museum ship and is located on the waterfront of Hamilton, Ontario.


PM to host Canada-European Union Summit

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, will travel to Ottawa and Toronto on September 26, 2014, to take part in a Canada-European Union (EU) Summit. The Prime Minister made the announcement during a roundtable meeting with members of the Ontario business community.
