Vice-Admiral Mark Norman, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, issued the following statement today in response to the Chief Review Services evaluation of Naval Forces:
"The Government of Canada has chosen to stand with our international partners to combat the terrorist threat posed by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Toronto joins Exercise NOBLE JUSTIFICATION today as part of her Operation REASSURANCE NATO deployment in response to Russia's aggressive military actions against Ukraine.
AREQUIPA, PERU – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C. M.P. for Niagara Falls and Minister of National Defence, met with his American counterpart, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel today at the Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas.
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence, will attend the eleventh biennial Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas (CDMA), which is being hosted this year in Arequipa, Peru from October 12-14.
"As Canada continues to do its part in the fight against ISIL, I am pleased to confirm that our military's Theatre Activation Team, comprised of approximately 120 Canadian Armed Forces members from across the country, will depart from Trenton, Ontario, next week.
We have all watched in recent months the alarming advances of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL). While it is of course neither Islamic, nor a state, it is a barbaric organization responsible for horrendous atrocities committed in Iraq and Syria, and its rapid growth has threatened regional stability.
More than 500 sailors from Her Majesty's Canadian Ships (HMCS) Calgary, Winnipeg, Brandon and Yellowknife have departed from their home port of Esquimalt, BC, to take part in operations and exercises off the coast of Southern California.
"ISIL is a threat to Canada, our Allies and to peace and security around the world. That is why our Government is committed to fighting this terrorist group while also providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by ISIL's horrendous acts of evil.
"ISIL is a terrorist group that poses an active threat not only to the region but also to us here in Canada. Its members are raping and pillaging across the Middle East; committing acts of genocide; beheading Western journalists; kidnapping women and selling them into slavery; abusing and torturing children, and planning attacks on this country. Left unchecked, ISIL represents a serious danger to the national security of this country and to Canadians.
