The Town of Altona and the Rural Municipalities of Portage la Prairie, Cartier, Macdonald, and Morris are benefitting from the New Building Canada Plan’s Small Communities Fund

The governments of Canada and Manitoba are announcing funding for five additional projects in communities in central Manitoba today under the New Building Canada Plan’s Small Communities Fund.
The Small Communities Fund is part of the $10-billion Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund. It will provide $1 billion to municipalities with fewer than 100,000 residents for priority public infrastructure projects that deliver on local needs.
The Town of Altona will install new aeration equipment to increase the organic capacity of the three existing aeration cells. In addition, a fourth aeration cell with a usable capacity of approximately 59,580 cubic meters will be installed as well as some erosion protection as necessary.
This infrastructure investment will allow the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie to expand its’ regional water distribution system by installing waterlines to provide safe potable water to residents.
The RM of Cartier will replace the aging cast-iron pipe that currently services approximately 275 of the residences and businesses that utilize the Elie Water Distribution System. The replacement of this aging infrastructure will assist the municipality in providing clean potable water.
The RM of Macdonald’s wastewater treatment facility expansion in Sanford includes the conversion of the existing primary cell into a secondary cell, the conversion of the existing secondary cell into a primary cell and the addition of a new secondary cell to increase storage capacity from the existing 50,550 cubic meters to approximately 71,290 cubic meters.
The RM of Morris will utilize the funding to expand the current Lowe Farm lagoon to increase storage capacity from the current 15,000 cubic meters to approximately 24,000 cubic meters in order to accommodate current demand as well as anticipated residential, industrial, and commercial growth over the next 25 years.
