Over $5,100,000 in CanNor funding benefits community infrastructure

News release

May 31, 2018 – Whitehorse, Yukon – Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor)

Public spaces are the hearts of small communities across Canada’s North. These cultural and heritage centers, trails and parks, sports and recreational facilities bring people together and provide space for families to play, socialize, exercise and access services. That is why the Government of Canada, through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150), has invested $5,142,443 to upgrade and renovate 24 public spaces in Yukon over the last two years.

This announcement was made today by Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament (Yukon) on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CanNor.

Because these investments addressed shared community infrastructure needs, communities, organisations, First Nations and the Government of Yukon contributed additional funding of over $6,300,000 to these same projects. These investments have a positive impact on community well-being, support local economic activity, improve access to public spaces, and leave a lasting legacy in Yukon.

The CIP 150 support for these projects, delivered in the North through CanNor, was provided as part of the Government of Canada’s celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation. The CIP 150 program concluded on March 31, 2018.

Quotes

“The values of openness, diversity and inclusion that define all Canadians are forged in our community spaces - the places that bring us together, that allow us to stay fit, to unwind, to connect with our friends, neighbours and nature, and that allow us to showcase what our great country has to offer. These investments in Yukon community infrastructure do just that. They support the vitality and growth of our communities.”

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency

“The CIP 150 investments in Yukon have made community infrastructure such as historical sites, camping grounds and nature trails more welcoming for residents as well as for travelers exploring this beautiful part of Canada. Tourism is a strong economic driver from coast to coast to coast, including in Yukon, and these projects will only further strengthen this industry, creating good middle-class jobs.”

The Honourable Bardish Chagger, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister of Small Business and Tourism

“The Government of Canada is proud to support projects that renovate and restore community and cultural spaces for northern families, youth and elders. By investing in community infrastructure, we are fostering healthier and more inclusive communities in Yukon.”
