Investment supports economic development, sport and tourism opportunities

January 8, 2019 — Hay River, Northwest Territories — Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor)

Sustainable economic development and vibrant community spaces are key to the health and vitality of Northern communities. That is why the Government of Canada, through the Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development program (SINED), is investing $230,000 to develop a large open concept pavilion in Hay River.

This announcement was made today by Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for Northwest Territories, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CanNor.

The Town of Hay River will receive funds to construct a permanent multi-season facility for the Fisherman’s Wharf market. Vendors, entrepreneurs and tourism operators will have access to heated and electrified retail space. The new pavilion will also act as a host facility for sporting events and a gathering space for community events.

The project will strengthen the town’s capacity to support and diversify the local economy, develop tourism opportunities, and enhance sport and recreational events.

-    The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency

“The Government of Canada is proud to support projects that foster sustainable economic development and healthy communities in the North. This exciting project will support Hay River’s local economy and provide a great space for sporting, recreational and community events.”

-    Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament, Northwest Territories

“We are pleased to support the Town of Hay River in its construction of a multipurpose year-round pavilion. This facility will complement and support the economic growth that we have seen at the town’s Fishermen’s Wharf market place; providing increased opportunity for local entrepreneurs and small business owners and new infrastructure for the town’s growing tourism sector.”

-    Hon. Wally Schumann, Minister of Industry Tourism and Investment, Government of the Northwest Territories

“The pavilion project creates a new destination attraction for visitors to our community and an updated outdoor gathering place for our residents. This facility will support an extended season for the very popular fisherman’s wharf market and provide a sheltered location for our community to host outdoor events such as the polar pond hockey tournament. The Town of Hay River could not have proceeded with this project without support from our federal and territorial government partners, CanNor and Industry, Tourism and Investment.”

-    Mayor Jameson, Town of Hay River
