CNSC statement on the ongoing situation in Ukraine

Statement

August 31, 2022

As Canada’s nuclear regulator, the CNSC continues to monitor the events in Ukraine and working closely with our federal partners to support the Canadian Government response.

With Ukrainian and Russian consent, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has arrived in Ukraine to conduct an inspection of Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) later this week. The team of experts and inspectors will assess the physical damage to the facilities and undertake vital safeguards activities.

Although the military action continues, latest reports indicate that the infrastructure at ZNPP remains intact and that there is no immediate radiological threat to the areas surrounding the nuclear power plant in Ukraine, to neighbouring countries or to Canadians.

The IAEA remains the most trusted and credible source of information on nuclear safety in Ukraine, and it continues to monitor and provide regular updates on the status of the country’s nuclear facilities. Follow the IAEA’s accounts on Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook.

An update will be forthcoming as details about the inspection become available.
