How did you arrive at PacifiCan?

My previous IT experience was in the private sector for almost 30 years. I’ve since been with the Government of Canada for some time, initially joining the IT team at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) before moving to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). A friend told me about the newly formed Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan), and I saw a chance to contribute my IT and soft skills to the growth of this regional development agency for British Columbia. I was looking for a new career trajectory in the public service, and, after researching PacifiCan, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to pursue.

What do you do in a typical day?

On a typical workday, I connect to the PacifiCan network either onsite or remotely. After checking emails and Teams messages, I launch various IT applications and connect with end users to see how I can make their technology experience more positive and productive. That way, they can accomplish more.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

Being a small agency, I’ve gotten to know most of the members through regular interactions, either virtually or in person. I love the people-oriented approach, the hybrid Return to Office (RTO) model promoted by leaders, the teamwork between various groups (e.g. PacifiCan, PrairiesCan, Shared Services Canada, vendors) that I work with, and the friendly workplace environment.

A few “quick facts”

As a political science professor, educator, and social action director in the Philippines, I lived and worked during periods of political change from authoritarian rule to liberal democratic revival. I have been married for over 30 years, with two sons and a daughter. My eldest son and his wife are expecting their first baby soon. In high school and college, I was active in varsity team sports like swimming and basketball, and now maintain physical activity through cycling, jogging, and walking. My wife and I are also active in the Catholic Church activities of our parish and school.

What city are you originally from?

I was born in Bacolod City on the island of Negros in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines.

What is your educational background?

I graduated with a Liberal Arts degree from De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila, Philippines, majoring in Political Science and minoring in Education. I completed a Master’s degree in Social Science at DLSU and was later accepted into the Doctoral Program in Political Science at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. I transitioned to a second career in Information Technology after deciding to get married and remain in Canada. I earned a Certificate in Local Area Networks (LAN) Administration at Langara College in Vancouver and later achieved the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) designation.

When did you start at PacifiCan?

I started with PacifiCan on a part-time secondment while wrapping up my IT duties at ESDC. Shortly after, I transitioned to a full-time role at PacifiCan as planned. Later, I was offered and gladly accepted an indeterminate position.

What have you enjoyed about your role at Pacifican thus far?

The teamwork, camaraderie, and support from colleagues and leaders make my day go by quickly and feel worthwhile.

Any advice you have for people who may want to join PacifiCan?

I like to say that “every day is a school day,” which means that, in work and in life, you learn from experiences and relationships by listening and observing.

Can you share one of your greatest accomplishments?

Maintaining friendships with former students and colleagues over decades is my definition of success.

Can you give us one or two things that you enjoy outside of work?

In my spare time, I love reading, listening to music, meditating, and going out with friends for concerts, movies, and social events.
