People of PacifiCan: Jennifer Tedman-Jones

Incredible innovation is taking place across B.C., and PacifiCan supports hundreds of industry-leading projects every year. Behind each exciting project is a team that cares deeply about supporting local businesses and innovators in their community.

As the new senior business officer for PacifiCan’s Kelowna office, Jennifer is working with business and community leaders to stimulate economic development in the Okanagan. Her new role and the unique opportunities in the Okanagan are the focus of this conversation.

How did you arrive at PacifiCan?

I will always be grateful to the University of British Columbia Okanagan and Mitacs for bringing me to the B.C. Interior. It is here that I met some of the wonderful people at PacifiCan and learned about the amazing projects they were working on.

What interested you about PacifiCan?

The opportunity to apply my experience and network to support a growing and diverse economy in the Southern Interior.

What do you do in a typical day?

Our expanded footprint means PacifiCan will be more accessible to British Columbians.  As a new regional Officer, I look forward to supporting high-impact local investments with quality advice, to advance the diverse economic interests of the Southern Interior. My roles will vary each day, but I will be supporting the business ecosystem as a convener, pathfinder, investor and advisor.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

Our job is to have a meaningful impact in an ever-evolving landscape. I get to work with and support people in the community who are taking a chance because they see the bigger picture. 

What makes the Southern Interior special?

It is that perfect blend of being big enough to take on ambitious projects and yet still small enough that you can rely on close-knit ties to bring partners together. Throw in a culture of resourcefulness and you have a very powerful combination to drive growth.

What was your favourite project at PacifiCan?

A favourite project? Ha, no way! That’s like asking a parent to pick a favourite child. I love them all. I will describe my favourite experience and it comes down to this: it’s a culture built by people who care. There is an unspoken recognition that, while we all know our constraints, caring means taking risks and that requires trust.

One of my favourite experiences was watching a conflict appear at a high level and resolving this conflict as each group drew on their diplomacy, empathy and mutual commitment to excellence to solve it in a timely and respectful way. When you are inspired by trust, you are empowered to care.

Any advice you have for people who may want to join PacifiCan?

The organization is changing at a fast pace. If you like working with great people who are committed to making a difference in their communities, keep your eyes out for opportunities.
