BC Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative propels British Columbia toward net zero future

Transcript

BCICEI has delivered $26 million to support over 100 clean energy projects in First Nations in B.C. since 2016. This support has also created nearly 1400 jobs and reduced enough CO2 emissions to take the equivalent of 128,000 cars off the road for a year.

What really surprised us was how ready First Nations were and how many First Nations were ready. There were so many that we were oversubscribed. So for us, the funding that is coming in today will help us make those communities happy, make those communities really achieve their goals. And we're going to help First Nations reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030.

First Nations have always really championed environmental stewardship in this province, and we've always protected and been proud to protect and steward our lands. I think getting back to that, being the frontrunners and the leaders in fighting climate change, making sure that our future generations are not seeing the wildfires and the flooding that have overtaken the province of British Columbia and knowing that what we're doing today is going to affect that positive change that our children and our grandchildren will benefit from.
