Contribution program
A contribution is a conditional transfer payment. This means that recipients must first meet certain eligibility requirements before they receive a payment and are also subject to post-payment performance conditions that are specified in a contribution agreement.
Polar Knowledge Canada’s Science and Technology Program
Polar Knowledge Canada supports research projects within its Science and Technology Program, which aims to create a strong research presence in Canada’s Arctic through Polar Knowledge Canada. The program builds a knowledge base to support effective solutions to Arctic issues, northern policy and research development, and advances Canada’s position as a leading Arctic nation.

Grant programs
A grant is a transfer payment subject to pre-established eligibility and other entitlement criteria. A grant is not subject to being accounted for by a recipient nor normally subject to audit by the department. The recipient may be required to report on results achieved.
For students
Northern Scientific Training Program
The Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP) was established to encourage Canadian universities to train northern specialists to meet national needs. The program provides supplementary funding to over 350 students annually at over 35 universities across Canada. The program is administered by Polar Knowledge Canada as part of its mandate to foster science and technology in Canada's North.
Polar Knowledge Canada Scholarship
The Polar Knowledge Canada Scholarship is a prize of $10,000 awarded to outstanding doctoral students in polar studies.
POLAR Antarctic Scholarship
POLAR offers scholarships, valued at $10,000, to outstanding Canadian students enrolled in a post-secondary graduate program (PhD or Master's) engaged in Antarctic research.
POLAR Northern Resident Award
POLAR offers awards of $5,000 to outstanding northern Canadian students enrolled in a post-secondary undergraduate program at a Canadian college or university.
POLAR Northern Resident Scholarship
POLAR offers scholarships of $10,000 to outstanding northern Canadian students enrolled in a post-secondary graduate program (PhD or Master’s) at a Canadian university.
Other grants
Northern Science Award
The Northern Science Award is presented annually to an individual or a team who have made a significant contribution to advancing knowledge and understanding of the Canadian North. In the spirit of the last International Polar Year (2007-2008), the award recognizes transformations in the way knowledge is produced and shared, and the impact research has on the North, its communities and people.
Polar Knowledge Canada Fellowship Program
The Polar Knowledge Canada Fellowship is for post-doctoral researchers and visiting researchers. Visiting researchers refers to university-based researchers, community-based researchers, and Indigenous knowledge-holders.
Applicants must be affiliated with a recognized university and with a Northern institute for the duration of their fellowship.

Polar Regional Research and Activities Grant Program
The Polar Regional Research and Activities Grant Program is enabled through POLAR’s Grants to Individuals, Organizations, Associations, and Institutions to Support Research and Activities Relating to the Polar Regions.
The Program’s objectives are to:
- Foster and encourage activities and events that promote greater awareness of, and increase knowledge about, polar regions.
- Attract, inform, and inspire new generations to carry on Canada’s increasing activities in polar affairs.
