Message from the Clerk to all Public Servants on National Public Service Week

Statement

Today marks the beginning of National Public Service Week – a week that recognizes the importance of the work you do as federal public servants.

We have much to be proud of and many successes to build on. In 2017, Canada’s Public Service was ranked as the most effective public service in the world.

We serve a diverse population and we must constantly learn, adapt and adjust to meet the needs of Canadians. I am confident in your ability to meet those needs.

We often talk about technology as a way to help build a strong, modern and effective public service. We must recognize the critical role of people. Public servants are at the heart of who we are and what we aim to achieve. Every week I engage with public servants and I am always impressed by their values of service and their dedication, creativity, innovation and willingness to embrace change.  My recent Annual Report to the Prime Minister, details many successes and great work of public servants. This is your work. These are your stories. Share them!

Many more stories remain untold, which is why during this year’s National Public Service Week, I want to hear from you. I encourage you to take a selfie, with your team, in your laboratory, park, library, office or other workplace and share it with Canadians on Twitter or Facebook. Use the #NPSW and #ServCDNs hashtag to show why you are proud to work for the public service.

I hope you will join your colleagues in celebrating the incredible impact you are having, every day, on Canada and its unlimited future.

There is always more to do to tackle challenges and seize opportunities. This week is for celebration and for renewing our commitment to serving this amazing country.

Michael Wernick

Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet
