Expert Roster for suicide prevention

The Public Health Agency of Canada is creating a roster of suicide prevention experts that can be called upon for expert advice, when needed, to complement internal science expertise. The Expert Roster for the Public Health Agency of Canada will ensure that experts are engaged through a transparent process that considers their skills and Canada's diversity in terms of gender, ethnicity, regions, Indigenous groups, racialized communities and official languages.

This pan-Canadian call out will establish a roster of suicide prevention experts across a range of disciplines and perspectives. This roster will be used to identify experts with relevant backgrounds to provide advice to the Agency including the establishment of a Suicide Prevention Science Advisory Table.

Why suicide prevention

Suicide is a significant public health issue that can affect people of all ages and backgrounds. There is no single cause that predicts, explains or prevents suicide and related behaviours. Suicide is the result of a dynamic interplay of multiple risk and protective factors. Effective suicide prevention relies on applying the latest available evidence and knowledge in designing and implementing interventions, policies and programs.

On May 31, 2024, the Government of Canada released the first National Suicide Prevention Action Plan (Action Plan) to strengthen a collective response to suicide in Canada. The Action Plan commits to the establishment of a Suicide Prevention Science Advisory Table to support decision making, priority-setting, and the integration of diverse expertise into the implementation of the Action Plan.

Expertise sought

For the purposes of establishing the Expert Roster for the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Agency is seeking submissions from people with a minimum of 10 years' experience working in suicide prevention, in one or more of the listed primary specializations (listed alphabetically below, not in order of importance).

Given the complex and intersectional nature of suicide and suicide prevention, it may be possible that all primary areas of specialization for suicide prevention may not be listed below.
