How is polio diagnosed? What is the treatment?
There is no cure for polio, but it can be prevented.
When people get polio, their symptoms are treated (for example, with rest and fluids). They may also receive:
- physiotherapy—to help with mobility
- occupational therapy—to help with activities of daily living
- follow-up from a neurologist (medical specialist for the nervous system)
Polio is diagnosed after a positive test for the poliovirus.
Consult a healthcare provider as soon as possible if you think you may have polio. Describe your symptoms over the phone before your appointment, so that the clinic can arrange to see you without exposing others to the poliovirus.
It is important to quickly identify cases of polio in Canada in order to stop it from spreading.
