Surveillance of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE)

Learn about tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) surveillance.

On this page:

How many cases are there of tick-borne encephalitis around the world?

Worldwide, 10,000 to 12,000 clinical cases of TBE are reported annually. This is thought to be much lower than the actual number of cases occurring.

Each year, about 3,000 TBE cases requiring hospitalization are recorded in Europe.

Russia has the highest number of reported TBE cases.

Although there may be under-reporting of TBE virus infection among travellers, there have been very few cases reported in the literature.

Between 2000 and 2009, only a few TBE virus infections have been reported in travellers:

  • 5 cases from the U.S.
  • 1 case from the United Kingdom
  • 1 case from Australia
