HIV in Canada: Surveillance summary tables, 2014-2015
The Public Health Agency of Canada publishes HIV/AIDS surveillance data annually in the HIV/AIDS in Canada: Surveillance Report. Due to on-going enhancements to surveillance infrastructure, this year a set of surveillance summary tables is provided as an overview of HIV case surveillance in Canada for 2014-2015, instead of a full report. Specifically, these tables present the number of HIV cases in Canada for 2014-15, by province/territory, sex, age group, exposure category and race/ethnicity. The number of perinatally HIV-exposed infants and current status is also presented.
Please refer to the previously released HIV and AIDS in Canada: Surveillance Report to December 31, 2014 for a full description of methodology, information on data collection and data limitations.
There were 2,096 cases of HIV diagnosed in 2015, up 2.2% from the 2,051 diagnosed in 2014 (Table 1). However, the national diagnosis rate at 5.8 per 100,000 in 2015, was equivalent to the 2014 rate. Ontario reported the highest number of cases (n=842), followed by Quebec (n=473), British Columbia (n=239) and Alberta (n=234). HIV diagnosis rates were higher than the national rate in: Saskatchewan (14.4 per 100,000), Manitoba (8.1 per 100,000) and Ontario (6.1 per 100,000).
Females made up 24.1% of HIV cases in 2015, down slightly from 24.3% reported in 2014 (Table 2).
Youth aged 15-24 represented 10.8% of cases in 2015, down from 11.4% in 2014. The largest increases with respect to the proportion of HIV diagnoses by age group were observed among those aged 25-29, from 11.8% in 2014 to 15.8% in 2015, and those aged 50 years and older, up from 21.9% in 2014 to 23.9% in 2015 (Table 3).
In 2015, the most common exposure category reported among adults (≥15 years old) was “Men who have sex with men” (MSM) (45.1%), followed by heterosexual contact (31.9%) and injection drug use (IDU) (16.3%) (Table 4). Among males, the MSM exposure category accounted for 59.7% of cases, followed by heterosexual contact at 21.4% and IDU at 12.5%, whereas heterosexual contact accounted for 64.4% of cases among females, followed by IDU at 27.9% (Table 4).
Table 5 shows the number and percent distribution of cases by race/ethnicity. In 2015, 45.6% of cases were reported as “White”, followed by 18.7% as “Black” and 17.5% as Indigenous.
There were 232 infants perinatally exposed to HIV in 2015; three of these infants were confirmed to be HIV-infected (see Table 6).
