CTOSS

CTOSS monitors adverse events related to transplantation of cells, tissues, and organs in Canada.

2011: The system started in 2011. Currently, it only covers tissue transplants. The project progress report contains a detailed methodology of surveillance.

30% of tissues transplanted in Canada are monitored through four participating provinces in CTOSS.

68,955 tissues were transplanted during 2011 to 2021.

18,053 tissues were transplanted during 2020 to 2021.

38 transplantation adverse events (TAEsFootnote *) were reported during 2011 to 2021.

12 TAEs were reported during 2020 to 2021. The incidence rate was 0.66 TAEs per 1,000 grafts.

Total tissues transplanted based on tissue types, CTOSS 2020 to 2021

Bone: 7,350
Skin: 3,564
Ocular tissue: 3,402
Tendon: 1,897
Heart valve: 559
Fascia: 332
Amniotic membrane: 828
Other allografts: 121
Total: 18,053

Tissues involving adverse events (N=38), CTOSS 2011 to 2021

Ocular: 23, 61%
Bone: 11, 29%
Tendon: 3, 8%
Heart valve: 1, 2%

Number of tissues transplanted by participating provinces, CTOSS 2020 to 2021

(For Alberta, AB Health Services covers Northern Alberta Regions)
Provinces Number of tissues transplanted Number of TAEs
Quebec 12,150 2
Alberta 3,875 10
Nova Scotia 1,618 0
New Brunswick 410 0

Conclusion

Despite an increased number of tissues transplanted in 2020-2021, incidence rates of TAEs in Canada remain low.
