Deactivate your prohibited firearms
If you've received a notification in your Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP) web portal account confirming that your declaration has been accepted and that you may proceed with deactivating your firearm(s), sign in and complete the following steps:
- Review and accept the Funding Agreement
- Provide your payment information
If you submitted a paper declaration, you will be contacted by an ASFCP representative by phone and receive further instructions by mail.
The collection, deactivation and compensation processes are expected to run from spring through early fall 2026. Processes will be done efficiently, with specific timelines established for each participating region of Canada. If you participated in the declaration period and have not yet received a notification, you will be notified once the deactivation process can begin in your area.
Important: You must wait to receive your notification and accept/ sign your Funding Agreement before proceeding to deactivate your firearm(s) for compensation. Failure to do so may result in ineligibility for compensation under the program. Do not bring your firearm(s) to a police detachment for deactivation.
Follow these steps to permanently deactivate your prohibited firearms:
Please note: After you've accepted your Funding Agreement, the program will mail you a "transportation kit" for each declared firearm. Your firearms must be packaged in your transportation kit to take or ship your firearm to a business authorized to perform deactivations.
Step 1 – Contact a business authorized to perform deactivations
You are responsible for coordinating the permanent deactivation of your firearm with a business authorized by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to perform deactivations.
If the nearest business authorized to perform deactivations is more than 50km away, you may qualify for reimbursement for costs of shipping through an approved licensed carrier, providing you do not have a personal, ownership relationship with either the business authorized to perform deactivations or the licensed carrier.
If you are unable to find an authorized business in your area, contact the Chief Firearms Officer in your province or territory.
Step 2 – Complete a Deactivation Notice Form
For any previously non-restricted, unregistered firearms, download and print the ASFCP Deactivation Notice – Unregistered Firearm form. Bring the completed form and properly packaged firearms to the business authorized to perform deactivations.
For previously restricted and registered firearms, bring the properly packaged firearms to the business authorized to perform deactivations. After deactivation is complete the business will provide you with the completed RCMP Notice of Deactivation Form.
Step 3 – Upload your completed forms to your web portal account
Once your firearm has been deactivated, upload the following documents to your web portal account:
- Your completed deactivation certificate(s) and Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP) or RCMP deactivation notice form(s)
- Your payment receipt from the business authorized to perform deactivations for possible reimbursement
- Your shipping receipt from an RCMP approved licensed carrier for possible reimbursement
See instructions if you chose to turn in your prohibited firearms to seek compensation.
See compensation process for information on when you'll receive your payment.
Collection appointments are not available for deactivation. Individuals who live in Saskatchewan or Alberta should consult their provincial government for any additional laws or regulations that may affect participation in the program.
