Collection and other disposal options

If you've received a notification in your Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP) web portal account confirming that your declaration has been accepted, sign in and complete the following steps:

If you submitted a paper declaration, you will be contacted by an ASFCP representative by phone and will receive further instructions by mail.

The collection, deactivation and compensation processes are expected to run from spring through early fall 2026. Collection for compensation will be done efficiently, with specific timelines established for each participating region of Canada. If you participated in the declaration period and have not yet received a notification, you will be notified once collection and deactivation can begin in your area.

Important: You must wait to receive your notification and accept/sign your Funding Agreement before proceeding to deactivate or turn in your firearm for compensation. Failure to do so may result in ineligibility for compensation under the program.

After you've accepted your Funding Agreement, follow the instructions to deactivate your prohibited firearms and/or book a collection appointment to turn them in.

Once your Funding Agreement is accepted or signed, follow the instructions to deactivate your prohibited firearms and/or book an appointment to turn them in.

Deactivate your prohibited firearms

Turn in your prohibited firearms

Important: Do not bring your firearm(s) to a police detachment or other designated collection site without having made an appointment in the portal or by phone for paper-based declarations.

Follow these steps to schedule a collection appointment and turn in your prohibited firearms to the participating police detachment or secure mobile collection unit assigned for your area.

Collection appointments may only be available for a limited time in your area. Check availabilities and book as soon as possible to ensure your firearm is collected and considered for compensation. The collection window and location for your area can be found on the ASFCP web portal or by calling the call centre.

Step 1 – View your assigned collection location and appointment availabilities

Collection locations are automatically assigned based on the postal code you entered when you created your account. If your address is incorrect in the web portal, call the contact centre.

View available time slots – morning, afternoon or evening.

When booking your appointment, please note that the earliest available timeslot will be based on the lead time needed for the transportation kit(s) to arrive.

Step 2 – Select your appointment

Available dates and appointment times are shown based on the time slot you selected.

Select your preferred date and time. Submit your appointment request.

You'll get a message in your web portal account within 24 hours confirming your appointment time and providing further instructions for turning in your firearm at your appointment.

Important: If you cannot attend your appointment due to unexpected circumstances, you must reschedule through the web portal at least 48 hours before your scheduled appointment. After that time, you must call the contact centre to reschedule or cancel. Missed appointments will require you to submit a new request.

Step 3 – Package your firearms using a transportation kit

After you sign your Funding Agreement, the program will mail you a "transportation kit" for each declared firearm. You can track the shipment of the transportation kit through your web portal account.

Safely package each firearm individually according to the instructions included with the kit. Your firearms must be complete and fully assembled to be eligible for compensation.

You are responsible for the safe packaging and transportation of your firearms. You must ensure that all firearm(s) are unloaded and packaged in accordance with the Storage, Display, Transportation and Handling of Firearms by Individuals Regulations and any applicable provincial or territorial laws.

Your firearms must be packaged in your transportation kit to bring them to your confirmed appointment. If you haven't received your kit at least 48 hours before your appointment date, you must reschedule your appointment through your online portal account. If no tracking information is available in the web portal, call the contact centre.

Step 4 – Bring your firearms to your confirmed appointment

Follow the appointment instructions provided in your web portal account when your appointment details were confirmed. You must bring:

  • Your Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) card
  • a second piece of government issued photo ID

An authorized collection officer will verify each firearm that you turn in and issue an official receipt for the firearm(s) you've declared. Additional verification may be required on-site.

After your firearms are turned in, they will be sent to a program facility for validation and destruction. Firearms collected through secure mobile collection units will be validated and destroyed on site. Any discrepancies, such as in the make or model, found during the validation process will be communicated to you, and may impact the estimated compensation outlined in your Funding Agreement.

Collection appointments and options may vary by region and must comply with all applicable provincial laws. All destruction of firearms collected over the course of the program will be completed before the end of the amnesty period, on October 30, 2026.

See Compensation process for information on when you'll receive your payment.

Individuals who live in Saskatchewan or Alberta should consult their provincial government for any additional laws or regulations that may affect participation in the program.

Participants who withdraw from the Program or do not proceed as instructed, including attending an agreed appointment time without valid reason, will not be able to continue and obtain compensation. While participating in the program is voluntary, compliance with the law is not. Individual firearm owners must safely dispose of or permanently deactivate their assault-style firearms before the amnesty period ends on October 30, 2026, or risk criminal liability for the illegal possession of a prohibited firearm.

Amnesty Orders protect individual owners from criminal liability while they take steps to comply with the law, including transporting a prohibited assault-style firearm for the purpose of disposal. An Authorization to Transport (ATT) is not required to transport a prohibited assault-style firearm for disposal during the amnesty period.

Disposal outside of program scope

Export without compensation

If you hold an export permit with Global Affairs Canada, you can choose to legally export your prohibited firearms to a legitimate customer outside of Canada, instead of turning them in or deactivating them.

If you plan to export your firearms abroad, you must follow all export permit requirements for firearms set out under the Export and Import Permits Act (EIPA) and related regulations administered by Global Affairs Canada. Visit the Global Affairs Canada (GAC) website to obtain more information.

Deliver to police without compensation

You can call the non-emergency line of your local police for instructions on how to safely deliver your firearms to police without participating in the program for compensation. Do not call 911 to book an appointment. Do not bring your firearms to the police without receiving specific instructions.

Deactivate without compensation

You can choose to deactivate your prohibited firearms with a business authorized to perform deactivations without participating in the program.
