Progress update of the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program
The Government of Canada is taking action to address firearms violence and combat crime by removing assault-style firearms from our streets and offering owners and businesses an opportunity to receive compensation.
Program for businesses
Between November 2024 and April 2025, businesses submitted claims for firearms and devices prohibited in May 2020. The program re-opened from April 23 to June 4, 2026 allowing claims for firearms and devices prohibited in May 2020, December 2024 or March 2025. The results below include both periods.

Program for individual firearms owners
The collection, deactivation and compensation processes are expected to run from spring through early fall 2026.
Collection for compensation is underway. It will be done efficiently, with specific timelines established for each province and territory. See more information on the estimated collection timeline.
