Government of Canada awards contract for oil-collecting equipment under Oceans Protection Plan

News release

August 7, 2018 - Dartmouth, Nova Scotia - Public Services and Procurement Canada

Under the Oceans Protection Plan, the Government of Canada is committed to providing the women and men of the Canadian Coast Guard with the equipment they need to carry out their important work on behalf of Canadians.

Today, Darren Fisher, Member of Parliament for Dartmouth-Cove Harbour, on behalf of the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Accessibility, announced that DSS Marine Co., of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, has been awarded a $3,792,876 contract to provide 11 boom high-speed sweep systems to the Canadian Coast Guard. The contract includes an option to purchase 60 additional units.

The Canadian Coast Guard uses boom high-speed sweep systems to gather oil slicks into a concentrated area, where skimmers and pumps can work more efficiently to remove it from the water. These systems will help to improve response times in the event of an oil spill.

“Our Government is committed to protecting our environment and ensuring our coastal communities remain safe and clean from unwanted hazards. This contract award is yet another example of our commitment to helping the Canadian Coast Guard fulfill its important role in ensuring marine safety with modern equipment.”

The Honourable Carla Qualtrough

“Through the Oceans Protection Plan, we are upgrading the Canadian Coast Guard’s environmental response equipment across the country so that the dedicated women and men of the Coast Guard are best prepared to respond to a potential incident. Investments like these will make Canada’s oceans safer, cleaner and healthier today and for generations to come.”

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson
Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard

“Congratulations to DSS Marine Co for their work in providing the Coast Guard with the equipment they need to carry out their important work on behalf of Canadians. This contract award underscores our government’s commitment to supporting regional economic development across Canada, including right here at home in Nova Scotia.”
