Government of Canada awards contract for maintenance of Canadian Coast Guard Ship Hudson

March 4, 2019 – Gatineau, Quebec – Public Services and Procurement Canada

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy, the Government of Canada is making sure the Canadian Coast Guard has the equipment and vessels it needs, while generating significant economic benefits.

On February 12, 2019, Public Services and Procurement Canada, on behalf of the Canadian Coast Guard, awarded a contract of $10,070,952.50 to Newdock St. John’s Dockyard Limited of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, for the refit of the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Hudson.

This contract will help sustain approximately 180 direct project-related jobs for Newdock and its subcontractors.

The refit work involves replacing steel and repairing various areas of the vessel’s decks and tanks. This regular, planned maintenance will ensure the vessel’s continued compliance with regulatory requirements.

Work began on February 25, 2019, and will be completed in fall 2019.

Quick facts

The CCGS Hudson is currently located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and is an important part of Canada’s Coast Guard fleet. It is mainly used for science programs, as well as support to Coast Guard programs and emergency operations, such as search and rescue.
The CCGS Hudson is a reliable ship, thanks to the regular maintenance required by the Coast Guard. The vessel remains in good condition, meets all Transport Canada regulatory requirements and is fully certified.
In the most recent dry dock period, the CCGS Hudson underwent an extensive survey of the fuel tanks as well as hull and superstructure steel conditions.
The vessel meets, and is compliant with, all pertinent Transport Canada regulations and requirements related to safety, navigation and environment, among others.
The contract was awarded following an open and competitive tendering process.
The National Shipbuilding Strategy is an unprecedented long-term, multi-billion-dollar commitment to renewing Canada's federal fleet. This strategy is designed to help build and maintain an effective federal fleet for maritime security and services, while maximizing economic benefits across the country.
