Help with filing webform B200, Excise Tax return

Before you file

Use the webforms to file an original or amended B200 return. The webform will let you:

Have your paperwork and other documentation ready.

For security reasons, our servers end a B200 webforms session after 18 minutes of inactivity. If your session ends, you will have to reauthenticate yourself and re-enter your data.

How to file

Fill out the return

Screen id: B-RE-FR-01

File an original or amended return

Select one of the following: Choose “Original” if you are sending a new return or “Amended” if you are making changes to a return.

Nil return: Tick this box if you have no excise tax to report for the period covered by this return.

Select a period (original return):  Choose a filing period from the drop-down list (it will display only periods with outstanding returns) or choose “Customized period.”

Select a period (amended return): Choose a filing period from the drop-down list. It will display only periods for which an original return has been received, with a maximum of 36 periods.

Customized period

Start date (YYYY–MM–DD): Enter the first day of the period covered by this return.

End date (YYYY–MM–DD): Enter the last day of the period covered by this return.

If you receive this error message “91776 – You cannot electronically file a return/refund for this period. Please refer to the Help section for more information,” you must enter more recent period dates or send a paper return to:

Customized reason: From the drop-down menu, choose a reason for entering a customized period. Do not file a return with a customized period if you want to change your filing frequency. To change your filing frequency, inform the Canada Revenue Agency in writing.

Other reason: If you chose “Other” as the reason for a customized period, please explain why.

Enter the number of litres in the Quantity in litres column.  Multiply the Quantity in litres by the Rate per litre or click “Calculate” to calculate the Tax payable for the following:

Air conditioners

Enter the number of air conditioners for which excise tax is payable in the Number of units column.  Multiply the Number of units by the Rate per unit or click “Calculate” to calculate the Tax payable.

Excise tax on fuel-inefficient vehicles (number of litres (L) consumed per 100 kilometres (km))

Enter the number of fuel-inefficient vehicles in the Number of vehicles column. Multiply the Number of vehicles by the Rate per vehicle or click “Calculate” to calculate the Tax payable for the following:

Calculate: Calculates the Total excise tax on fuel-inefficient vehicles amount.

Review authorized deductions

Add deduction:  Choose this button to add information if you are claiming a deduction.

The following buttons will be displayed once an authorized deduction has been added:

Modify selected deduction:  Choose a row and select this button to modify deduction information.

Delete selected deduction:  Choose a row and select this button to delete deduction information.

Add deductions

Code: Enter your authorized deduction code.

Quantity or units: Enter the applicable number in the Quantity or Units field.

Rates per unit: Enter the applicable rate in the Rate per unit field.

Tax deductible: Multiply the number in Quantity or Units by the Rate per unit to calculate the Tax deductible.

Add deduction: Select this button to add another deduction.

Cancel:  Choose this button if you do not wish to enter or want to enter deduction information. 

Modify selected deduction:  Choose a row and select this button to modify deduction information.

Delete selected deduction:  Choose a row and select this button to delete deduction information.

Refund

File a refund to offset an amount payable: If you would like to apply for an N15 refund with your return, tick "Yes." “File a Refund” will then appear at the bottom of this return’s summary page screen, so you can enter the details of your refund.

Refunds (N15): Enter the N15 refund amount you are claiming.

Summary

You will see a summary of your completed return. Check all of your data and make any changes before sending your return. If you find an error, click “Previous” to make corrections.

Authorized deductions:  The amount of authorized deductions you are claiming.

Total amount payable:  This amount will be calculated automatically and is the sum of all tax payable amounts.

Refunds (N15):  The amount of the N15 refund you are claiming.

Net amount payable:  This amount will be calculated automatically [Total tax payable less deductions and Refunds (N15)]

If you are not sending an N15 webform with your return (you ticked ‘No’ for ‘File a refund to offset an amount payable’ on screen B-RE-B200-06), you will see the following:

Certification statement: You must tick the box certifying that the information you gave is accurate and complete before you can click “Submit."

Previous: Returns you to the previous screen.

Submit: Automatically sends the return to the Canada Revenue Agency. You will then see a confirmation page.

If you are sending an N15 refund webform with your return (you ticked "Yes" for "File a refund to offset an amount payable" on screen B-RE-B200-06), you will see the following:

File a refund: Clicking this button will open the first screen so you can complete the N15 webform for your account.

Confirmation

The confirmation page gives details of your return information, along with the filing date and confirmation number of the return.

If you have sent one or more N15 webforms with your B200 return, you will see a summary of the total amount you are claiming to offset an amount owing on your return. To see the full details of the return, you can click "View as PDF."

Keep the confirmation number for your records. Do not send us a paper copy of the documents you filed online.

Print: Prints the confirmation page.

View as PDF: You can save and print a copy of this return in PDF format.

File another return: Returns you to the first page so you can file another return for the same account.

Correct errors

If you make an error while filling out your B200 return, you will see an explanatory error message above the field with the error.  

Correct all errors before going to the next page in the process. You will not be allowed to send your return until you correct all errors.

After you have corrected all the errors, click “Next".

After you file

Confirmation number

You will receive a confirmation number after you have corrected all errors and sent your return for processing. This confirmation number means that the Canada Revenue Agency received your return.

You can save or print a copy of the confirmation page and the completed B200 return for your records. To print a copy of the confirmation page, click “Print.” To save a copy of the completed B200 return, click "View as PDF".

Do not mail us a paper copy of the returns you filed online.

After we receive your return

We may contact you to verify your supporting documentation. This does not mean you are being audited. It is simply part of our process for all paper and online returns.

Email notifications

Most correspondence is only available online in My Business Account by default, except when a business has changed its delivery method to receive paper mail. Business owners registered in My Business Account can add an email address to receive notifications when their Canada Revenue Agency mail is available to view in their secure online account, and when other important changes are made to their account. To register, select “Profile” then “Manage notification preferences” and follow the steps.

Making a payment

If you have a balance owing, you can make your payment in many different ways.

For information on how to make your payment, go to Make a payment to the Canada Revnue Agency. If you send your payment late, you might have to pay penalties and interest at the prescribed rate.

Troubleshooting B200 online returns

Why can't you change your browser setting while I'm in a secure session?

Do not modify your browser setting while in a secure B200 webforms session because it may cause your browser to freeze or the session to end.

The secure webpages for the B200 return do not display properly. Why?

Several factors can affect how these pages will display on your system. Try the following:

  • Use the default browser settings.
  • Maximize your browser window.
  • Close the Favorites window.
  • Use the browser's Reload or Refresh button.
  • Make sure you have enough RAM for your browser's requirements.
You were away from your computer for 30 minutes. Can you still complete your return?
