Help with filing webform XE8, Excise Tax Act application for refund of federal excise tax on gasoline

Use the webforms to file an XE8 application for refund. The webforms will let you:

Business number information

You must enter a business number or indicate it is your first time filing and you do not have a business number. When you choose the business number radio button the account number that was assigned to you for refund purposes must be entered.

Claimant account information

Check that your mailing address and phone number is correct.

Language of Communication

Choose your preferred language of communication.

Update address

If the address displayed is correct, choose the no radio button to indicate that no change is required.

If the address displayed is incorrect, choose the yes radio button and update your address information.

This address update applies only to this refund application. It does not change the mailing address for your accounts with the Canada Revenue Agency.

If you receive this error message, you cannot electronically file a refund for this period (Ref. Code: 91776). You must enter a more recent start date or send a paper refund  to:

Subsection 68.16(1) of the Excise Tax Act specifies that a refund will not be paid unless you file this application within two years after the gasoline was purchased.

If you have entered a BN on Screen ID XE8-NBC-02, the following question will be displayed:

Do you have a permanent mobility impairment and need to submit a copy of your medical certificate certified by a qualified medical practitioner?”

If you need to submit an updated medical certificate choose the yes radio button. You will have an opportunity on the confirmation page to submit the medical certificate.

If you already have a valid medical certificate on file you do not need to submit it again, choose the no radio button.

If you are filing for the first time, you will be given the opportunity to submit your medical certificate on the confirmation page.

Certification statement: You must tick the box certifying that the information you provided is accurate and complete before you can click “Submit”. Otherwise, the application for refund will not be sent.

Submit: Automatically sends the application for refund to the Canada Revenue Agency. You will then see a confirmation page.

After you file

Confirmation number

This confirmation number means that the Canada Revenue Agency received your refund application.

Keep the confirmation number for your records. Do not send us a paper copy of the documents you filed online.

Based on your responses within the web form you may be given a Submit documents link in order to provide supporting documents for your claim.

After we receive your submission

We may contact you to verify your supporting documentation. This does not mean you are being audited. It is simply part of our process for all paper and online refunds.
