Dynamic answers (CSIS)
Reporting national security information
CSIS’s role is to investigate activities suspected of constituting threats to the security of Canada and to report on these to the Government of Canada. Key threats include:
- Terrorism
- Espionage
- Foreign interference
- Cyber-tampering affecting critical infrastructure
- The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
If you believe you have information related to national security that CSIS should know about, please report it.
To report an immediate threat related to national security, please call 9-1-1 or contact your local police department. CSIS is not a law enforcement agency.
To report a non-immediate threat related to national security, please contact CSIS by phone at 613-993-9620 24/7 or complete the online form: Reporting National Security Information - Canada.ca
Please note: Inquiries through this webform related to all other matters, including recruitment and security screening, will not be answered.
Status updates related to security screening
Security screening related to immigration and citizenship applications:
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is responsible for the status of individual files regarding immigration or citizenship applications.
For more information on CSIS’ role in security screening for immigration applications or Canadian citizenship, please visit: CSIS Security screening.
CSIS will not respond to correspondence or questions related to individual security screening requests for immigration applications. Please liaise with IRCC as the owner of these programs.
Under the Privacy Act, individuals have the right to access personal information about themselves held by government institutions. Therefore, individuals may request records relating to the status of their security clearance applications by visiting the Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) site.
Security screening related to government security clearances:
Inquiries on the status of a security clearance application should be directed to the sponsoring department or agency’s Departmental Security Officer (DSO).
For more information on CSIS’ role in government security screening, please visit: CSIS Security screening.
CSIS will not respond to questions related to individual security clearance requests.
Under the Privacy Act, individuals have the right to access personal information about themselves held by government institutions. Therefore, individuals may request records relating to the status of their security clearance applications by visiting the Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) site.
Access to information and personal information requests
As a federal organization, CSIS is bound by the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act, just like other departments and organizations. However, it must also ensure that any disclosure is done in line with its national security activities. As such, what CSIS can disclose may be limited.
To submit an access to information or personal information request, please go to the Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) site.
Information about your immigration or citizenship application can be found on Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) Application Status page. If you have already consulted the Application Status page and wish to make a request for information about an immigration or citizenship application, it must be submitted through the Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) site.
Please note that the role of CSIS ATIP Section is limited to the processing of records. It has no authority to intercede in security screening applications. An increase in requests for the status of immigration/citizenship applications has impacted CSIS ATIP's ability to respond to these types of requests, and significant delays can be anticipated.
Questions regarding an existing access to information or personal information request can be directed to the Access to Information and Privacy Coordinator:
