Addiction can be a heavy load to carry
We are committed to helping men in trades who are impacted by substance use.
Addiction and overdoses impact men in trades more than in other industries. Working in trades can come with pain, injury and stress. This can lead to using substances like drugs or alcohol to cope, which can lead to addiction and overdoses.
Some avoid asking for help because they fear they will be judged, get in trouble or be seen as weak. In fact, we know it takes strength to reach out for help.
We can help ease the burden. Let's reduce stigma and ensure men in trades feel safe and supported to reach out for help if they are struggling.
We support Health Canada's Ease the Burden initiative that aims to reduce stigma and the impact of addiction and overdoses for men in trades.
What can you do?
If you want to help someone who may be struggling with substance use:
- Be respectful, open and patient because they may be afraid to talk
- Share that it takes strength to ask for help
- Help explain that addiction is not a choice or a personal failure—it actually changes the brain
- Remember that people dealing with addiction deserve the same care as those with any other medical condition
- Direct them to free resources to get expert advice and support or someone to talk to
If you are personally struggling with substance use:
- Know that addiction is not a choice—it changes your brain making it hard to stop using even when you want to
- Talk to someone—like a friend, a health professional, a union rep or employee assistance program
- Help is available—you can access free resources including confidential professional advice and support from anywhere
- Know that there is hope—life can get better with the right support
