Consultation: Comment period for the danger to human health or safety assessment for products containing button or coin batteries and the packaging of button and coin batteries

From Health Canada

Current status: Open

Opened on November 24, 2025 and will close to new input on January 22, 2026.

Health Canada has added products containing button/coin batteries and the packaging of button/coin batteries to Table 2 of the General Prohibitions process. Table 2 lists hazards associated with classes of consumer products for which Health Canada has conducted a danger to human health or safety assessment.

This proposal does not constitute a ban on button/coin batteries and the packaging of button/coin batteries. In fact, many of the products currently on the market are compliant with these safety criteria and would continue to be available for purchase. Only products that do not meet these safety criteria would be impacted pending feedback received from the consultation.

Health Canada invites stakeholders to provide comments on this danger to human health or safety assessment. Health Canada will consider these comments when making a determination on whether there is a danger to human health or safety posed by products that do not meet this safety criteria.
