Secure connectivity by design

Secure connectivity by design

Shared Services Canada (SSC) is the digital foundation of the Government of Canada (GC). SSC delivers high-performing, resilient and secure network connectivity, enabling departments to provide essential services to Canadians. As more Canadians rely on online services, effective IT and cyber security is essential.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, a time to spotlight our efforts in designing secure digital systems. Throughout the month, we’ll highlight SSC’s contributions to digital government. We’ll spotlight the connectivity and security services that connect GC employees to their work, each other and Canadians, no matter where they are or what GC device they use.

How we connect and protect

What is connectivity?

Connectivity is the network infrastructure that allows GC employees to use their devices—whether computers, tablets or mobile phones—to access the tools they need. These tools include government networks, the Internet, data centres and cloud services. SSC uses different technologies, such as optical fibre, Wi-Fi, in-building cabling and even satellites, to ensure seamless connectivity.

What is cyber security?

Cyber security covers the technologies, processes, practices and responses that protect electronic information and data, as well as information architecture, from breaches and cyber incidents. They safeguard the information that travels through government networks and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of services to Canadians.

Stories

  • Defending our digital frontier

SSC’s perimeter security services are the first line of defence against cyber threats to the GC network. These services work to safeguard sensitive government information, keep operations secure and ensure Canadians can access their online government services without disruption.

  • For Shared Services Canada, cyber and IT security are team sports

Cyber and IT security is a shared responsibility across the federal government. SSC plays a key role in the GC’s IT Security Tripartite, a team dedicated to protecting government systems.

  • Upholding our cyber integrity

SSC’s email security and monitoring services improve the GC’s resilience against cyber threats. This ensures safe and reliable communication across the government.

  • Enterprise Time Service: Accurate time, better results

SSC works with the National Research Council to synchronize GC networks and devices using an atomic clock. Accurate timekeeping improves government services for Canadians.

  • Shared Services Canada’s “SECRET” agenda

SSC is expanding its systems and services for classified (SECRET-level) communications. This supports the GC’s growing need for highly secure, sensitive communication channels.
