Statement by the Taxpayers’ Ombudsman on the announcement on improvements to tax filing services

Ottawa, Ontario

January 9, 2018

The Taxpayers’ Ombudsman, Sherra Profit, today issued the following statement on the latest announcement on improvements to tax filing services for Canadians by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The announcement stated that the CRA is "taking steps to make it easier for Canadians to file their income tax and benefit returns, no matter which method they choose."

"I am pleased to see the CRA’s actions regarding improving services to low income and fixed income taxpayers. Many of these taxpayers face unnecessary burdens in filing their tax returns.

These changes are meant as improvements, but I will remain vigilant to ensure that they do not create new problems for taxpayers. Should taxpayers have issues using the new File my Return automated telephone filing service, I invite them to call my office so we can track the issues appropriately and make recommendations for improvements effectively.

Although the availability of tax packages will be limited from now on, I commend the CRA for proactively sending filing packages to paper filers. This initiative goes beyond the current service expectations of Canadians and will help these filers. My office will monitor how this transition will affect Canadians.

These initiatives support our common goal of improving service to taxpayers. My Office will continue to engage the CRA in open communication in recognition of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, mutual respect, and fairness."
