United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals

Introduction

In 2015, all United Nations (UN) member states came together and adopted Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. At its heart are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that encompass the social, economic, and environmental challenges of today.

Many Government of Canada priorities align with the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, including gender equality, diversity and inclusiveness, environmental sustainability, and economic prosperity.

All federal ministers are accountable for implementing the 2030 Agenda and for pursuing the SDGs in their areas of responsibility. Officials across federal departments and agencies are responsible for integrating the SDGs into their work, engaging with stakeholders and reporting on progress made on the SDGs within their purview.

The table below identifies key examples of Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) strategies, initiatives or areas of work that will contribute to advancing the SDGs.

UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Planned strategies, initiatives, or areas of activity Associated domestic ambitions and targetsFootnote *

SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

TBS will be:

  • continuing to advance the implementation of the Pay Equity Act across the public service
  • continuing to develop and implement initiatives, including a modernized senior leaders strategy, that promote career progression and inclusion as well as enable leadership development and targeted succession planning and recruitment for women and other equity seeking groups

For information about TBS’s activities in this area, see the Centre on Diversity and Inclusion.

Ambition

Gender equality in leadership roles and at all levels of decision-making.

Target

Greater representation of women in leadership roles.

SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

TBS is leading the greening of Government of Canada operations by supporting departments as they implement the Greening Government Strategy, by working to:

  • electrify the entire federal fleet of light duty vehicles by 2030
  • purchase 100% clean electricity by 2022, where available, and by no later than 2025, by producing or purchasing renewable electricity
  • minimize waste generation and water use
  • green their procurement, particularly for goods and services that have a high environmental impact over their full life cycles

For more information about TBS’s activities in this area, see the Greening Government Strategy.

Ambition

Canadians consume in a sustainable manner.

Target

Zero-emission vehicles represent 10% of new light duty vehicle sales by 2025, 30% by 2030 and 100% by 2040.

SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

TBS is leading the greening of Government of Canada operations by supporting departments as they implement the Greening Government Strategy, by working to:

  • ensure that all new buildings and major building retrofits prioritize low carbon and climate resilience by minimizing the cost of GHG emissions over the full building life cycle
  • electrify the entire federal fleet of light duty vehicles by 2030
  • work with national safety and security fleet departments in developing plans to reduce their emissions and become net‑zero by 2050
  • understand the risks posed by climate change impacts and develop effective responses

For more information about TBS’s activities in this area, see the Greening Government Strategy.

Ambition

Canadians reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and are well‑equipped and resilient to face the effects of climate change.

Target

By 2030, reduce Canada’s total greenhouse gas emissions by 40% to 45%, relative to 2005 emission levels. By 2050, achieve economy-wide net‑zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Policy coherenceFootnote

As one of the Government of Canada’s central agencies, TBS:

  • helps ensure that the SDGs are considered, accounted for, and reflected in the Government of Canada’s priorities and existing planning and reporting processes
  • works with government departments and agencies to promote policy coherence across the federal government

TBS will help support policy coherence as the government works to implement the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs through:

  • supporting the government in advancing toward implementation of a strategic policy review of government programs.
  • ensuring that government policy continues to be developed through an intersectional lens, reflects the needs and aspirations of Canadians, and supports the path to net-zero.
