Narrative
The Access to Information Act requires a legislative review every five years with the first review launched in June 2020 and completed in December 2022 with the tabling of the report, Access to Information Review Report to Parliament. The Access to Information Regulations will be revisited after each review of the Access to Information Act to ensure that they align with any changes that may be made as a result of these reviews. On June 23, 2023, the regulations were amended to bring them in line with the current version of the Access to Information Act.

Provisions requiring amendments were identified to clarify the circumstances under which institutions must communicate with, and provide services to, the public in English, in French, or in both official languages.

The amended Official Languages Regulations requires a review be undertaken every 10 years. This review is expected to start in 2026–27 in order to be completed by 2029.
Outcomes
The review of these regulations was completed in 2019. Amended regulations were registered by the Clerk of the Privy Council on June 25, 2019, and published in the Canada Gazette, Part II, on July 10, 2019. The review produced more inclusive official languages regulations that better reflect community needs and respond to demographic and technological changes. The amendments will also enhance Canadians’ access to federal services in both official languages.

Review of the Red Tape Reduction Regulations

Rationale
A review of the Red Tape Reduction Regulations is part of the legislated review of the Red Tape Reduction Act, which began in 2020. This review was completed on December 22, 2022, and is available at Report on the Internal Review of the Red Tape Reduction Act. The next review of the Red Tape Reduction Regulations and its associated policies are expected to take place approximately every five years alongside routine regulatory policy reviews.
Narrative
The Red Tape Reduction Act, brought into effect in 2015, sets out requirements for federal departments and agencies to control the growth of administrative burden on business when developing regulations (that is, the one-for-one rule). The Red Tape Reduction Regulations set out the requirements for calculating administrative burden, reconciliation timelines, exemptions, and reporting.
The Red Tape Reduction Regulations and its associated policies will be examined as part of routine regulatory policy review led by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat.
