Canada and U.S. Reaffirm a Robust Regulatory Cooperation Approach

Collaboration and better alignment of our regulatory systems is good for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border

Co-leads of the Canada- United States Regulatory Cooperation Council, Assistant Secretary Robert Carberry of the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, and Deputy Administrator Dr. Dominic Mancini of the United States Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, reaffirmed the strong commitment Canada and the United States have placed on regulatory cooperation during meetings on May 4 and 5 in Washington D.C.
Over 400 regulators and stakeholders from both sides of the border, including more than 70 Canadian business and industry representatives from 22 sectors, met over the two days to discuss ways to increase regulatory cooperation between Canada and the U.S. across more than 16 departments and agencies.
These meetings brought together Canadian and U.S. senior regulatory officials and stakeholders from both sides of the border to discuss areas of opportunity over a wide range of sectors, such as: consumer health products and medical devices, chemicals management, veterinary drugs, energy efficiency standards, automotive/locomotive and connected vehicles, plant and animal health, food safety, crop protection, and meat inspection and certification.

- The regulatory cooperation effort between Canada and the U.S. was initiated in 2011.
- A Forward Plan was released in August 2014 that includes measures to secure regulatory cooperation as a permanent element between Canadian and U.S. regulatory departments.
- In March 2016, Canada and the U.S. announced measures to deepen the regulatory relationship between Canada and the U.S.:
- the enhancement of the Canada-U.S. Secretariat
- a new industry, consumer and expert group to work with the Canada-US Regulatory Cooperation Secretariat with an ongoing focus on consumer and industry benefits
- a call for a new and more ambitious set of work plans by early summer
