Where to submit your passport for your online temporary resident application

After we send you a passport request, you have 30 days to submit your passport.

Follow the instructions under the “Passport requirements” section:

• Include a copy of the passport request (email or letter) with your passport submission.
• Make sure your passport is valid for the entire time you’re in Canada.
• Make sure you have at least 1 blank page in your passport.

Family or group applications

Each traveller must have received their own passport request email or letter.

If a member of your family or group has not received their request email or letter, they must wait until they get it before submitting their passport.

To make sure you meet the 30-day time limit to submit your passport, family or group members may have to send their passports separately.

  Passports for super visa applications must be sent to a visa application centre (VAC) outside of Canada

  If you applied for a super visa, don’t mail your passport to a visa office in Canada. We can’t print your visa from inside Canada.

  Mailing instructions

  How long it takes to get your passport back

  Once we receive your passport at an IRCC processing office, we aim to return it to you within 10 business days plus mailing time. Mailing time depends on the type of mailing service you used when you mailed us your passport.

  If you used mail or a courier with tracking, use the tracking number to confirm when we received your passport.

    If you’ve submitted your passport and urgently need it back sooner

  Check the tracking number to see where your passport is.

  • If it’s in the mail, wait for delivery.
  • If we have your passport, call the Client Support Centre.

  • Send us your passport by mail (Canada Post) or courier. Choose and pay for a mailing service:
    • If you’re not using a courier service, we recommend you use Canada Post’s Xpresspost or Priority Post services, so you can track your envelopes.
    • The mailing service you choose will determine how quickly your passport is returned to you.
  • Purchase 2 prepaid envelopes:
    • If you live in Ontario or Quebec, purchase regional envelopes.
    • If you live in another province or territory, purchase national envelopes.
  • Envelope sizes:
    • To send us your passport:
      • 1 letter-size envelope (318 x 241 mm)
    • For us to mail you back your passport:
      • 1 standard-size envelope (260 x 159 mm)
  • Write down the tracking numbers for both envelopes. To track your envelopes with Canada Post or with your courier service:
    • Use the tracking number for the letter-size envelope to find out when we receive your passport at our office.
    • Use the tracking number for the return envelope (standard-size), to find out when we mail it back to you.
  • Prepare your package:
    • Write your full mailing address on the return envelope (standard-size) in the “Deliver to” field.
    • In the letter-size envelope, put:
      • your passport
      • a copy of your passport request letter showing your unique client identifier (UCI) and application numbers
      • the return envelope with your address on it
